boomerang coffee table

commission, 2023. cherry, oak, white melamine.

This commission came to me in December 2022, and the client was kind enough to wait for the final design to be produced during the following summer. The conceptual discussion centered on a mid-century to 70’s design aesthetic with at least one table surface. The dimensions were based on the client’s current living room furnishings to ensure the table would not impede movement. The latter point also informed the boomerang legs which are pulled in to allow the foot to easily swing around vs. a corner leg (the client’s dog also approves). The white melamine tops were made of salvage material, saving some cost and diverting it from a landfill.

speaker stands and audio rack

personal, 2023/2018. cherry, oak, black walnut, baltic birch plywood.

After an intense first year of graduate school at the University of Washington, I took a break from Seattle life to return to Spokane and produce this personal project. I have been needing a pair of speaker stands to accompany the stereo rack I did in 2018, but I lacked the time to dive into it until recently. I moved into a new place a few months ago with my partner and the new space presented a fine opportunity to design something that went well spatially with our living room, complimented the previous work, and displayed my improved skills. These stands hold the upper speakers at ear height when sitting on a couch while the lower box is sized for storage/display, or in my case a second pair of speakers. They are low and ideally would sit on a low-profile stand to tilt them back, but I prefer the lean look of them sitting flat inside the compartment.

wright chessboard

commission, 2021. maple, mahogany, black walnut.

I had the pleasure of delivering my first completed commission to the client last weekend. Without further ado, I present the Wright Chessboard, designed and fabricated for an old friend of mine. The playing surface is 18″x18″ (USCF Tournament standard 1-1/4″ squares) with a band of black walnut and maple creating a top of roughly 24″x24″. The band of black walnut is also the joint line where the top comes off to reveal the piece storage are inside of the base. Some chamfers and fillets with the router give the board a nice feel and make it easier to pick up when it is sitting on the table.

entertainment console table

commission, 2021. jatoba, maple, baltic birch ply.

The body of the unit is made from baltic birch plywood while the frame is jatoba. The jatoba is incredibly dense and heavy, giving the unit an impressive amount of weight and stability. Maple splines strengthen the miters in the jatoba frame, along with small lap-jointed braces. The frame is deconstructable into two end pieces and the bottom rails, making the piece easier to move dimensionally and weight wise. In the photographs, the piece is being used by the client to display part of their record collection and a few pieces of their audio equipment with an antique turntable as the showpiece.

bloom plant stand

personal, 2022. cherry, oak, reclaimed steel grating.

This plant stand is completely reconfigurable, with various shelf designs that slot into secure dado notches in the frame. The steel grating ensures the moisture associated with many types of plant pots does not impact the wooden structure while also allowing light to filter through it. The stand can be quickly assembled and disassembled thanks to eight allen key screws that connect the vertical and horizontal frame elements. The wide legs provide stability, even with large plants extending beyond the structure.
